Atlas of Canada 1st Edition – Origins of the People (Maritime Provinces, Quebec & Ontario)
This plate from the Atlas of Canada 1st Edition, published by Natural Resources Canada, carries two maps of the origins of the people circa 1901: one covering the Maritime provinces and eastern Quebec, the second covering Quebec and Ontario.
The coloring tells the story of settlement. English, Scottish, Irish, French and German origins dominate the legend, with people of British origin prevailing in every province except Quebec. French origins spill outward from Quebec into eastern Ontario, northern New Brunswick, southwestern Nova Scotia and southern Cape Breton. Two small pockets near Halifax are marked as descendants of persons deported from Jamaica. The German areas, largely descendants of United Empire Loyalists, show in southern Nova Scotia and in Waterloo, Lincoln and Welland counties.
Genealogy researchers use this map to place Acadian and Loyalist family lines, and Canadian history instructors hang it beside period census tables to show students how immigration shaped the provinces.
