The World in Hemispheres with Other Projections
Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s atlas plates sat in American schoolrooms and parlors through the Civil War years, and this one is among his most ambitious: the whole earth broken into projections instead of forced onto a single flat sheet.
The 1864 Mitchell hemisphere world map carries the full engraved title The World in Hemispheres with Other Projections. The eastern and western hemispheres anchor the composition, ringed by smaller studies of the globe:
- Northern and southern hemispheres drawn as separate polar-centered circles
- An inset of the north polar region
- Land and water hemispheres, the 19th century convention for showing how unevenly continents and oceans sit on the planet
Map Shop prints this as an ultra-high-quality reproduction, scanned from the original at high resolution and digitally restored, so the engraved coastlines and hemisphere borders stay crisp. It is a reproduction, not an original 1864 sheet.
Choose paper, lamination, mounting to foam core, black or walnut rails, or a framed finish.
