1775 Lattre and Janvier World Map
In 1775 the world map was still an argument in progress. This map captures that moment, drawn on a double hemisphere projection by French geographer Jean Janvier and engraved and published in Paris by Jean Lattré, two names that defined Enlightenment-era French cartography. Europe’s mapmakers had Pacific reports coming in faster than they could confirm them, and the sheet shows it.
- Eastern and Western Hemispheres set side by side as twin circles, the standard scholarly format of 18th century Paris atlas work
- Cartography credited to Janvier, engraving and publication by Lattré, dated 1775
- A world drawn before Cook’s third voyage tested the Pacific Northwest and before any southern continent had been sighted
A reproduction like this reads well in a study, a law office, or a library reading room. Map Shop sells plenty of them to history readers, classroom teachers, and designers hunting for a wall piece with real scholarship behind it.
