1850 Mitchell Map of Canada East (Formerly Lower Canada)
Before Confederation, Quebec was Canada East, the eastern half of the united Province of Canada created in 1841 and known before that as Lower Canada. This 1850 Mitchell map carries that exact name in its full title, Canada East formerly Lower Canada, and shows the St. Lawrence valley when Montreal, Quebec City, and Trois-Rivières anchored a landscape still organized by seigneurial counties, with the Gaspé Peninsula reaching toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Samuel Augustus Mitchell was the leading American commercial map publisher of the mid-nineteenth century, and his atlas plates set the visual language most Americans used to picture North America.
- Drawn by American geographer Samuel Augustus Mitchell, dated 1850
- Digitally restored from a high-resolution scan of the original, published by Artokoloro
- A reproduction print, not an original antique sheet
- Finishing at Map Shop includes paper, lamination, foam core mounting, rails, and framing in black or walnut molding
A quiet fit for a study wall, a genealogy room, or a Quebec history collection.
