1891 Winston-Salem Map
In 1891, Winston and Salem were still two separate towns, and leaf tobacco paid the bills in both. This map captures that moment, more than two decades before the two municipalities merged in 1913 to form the city known today as the seat of Forsyth County, North Carolina. It is unusually accurate for its date, and the tobacco trade is labeled building by building.
Among the landmarks identified on the map:
- A. B. Gorrell & Son, Farmers Ware House for the sale of Leaf Tobacco
- M. W. Norfleet & Sons, Piedmont Tobacco Ware House, and their separate Leaf House
- T. L. Vaughn & Co., manufacturers of all grades of plug and twist tobacco
- Hamlen Liipfert & Co., makers of fancy plug, twist and smoking tobacco
- The Williamson Tobacco Co
