Stanford’s 1854 Route Map of the Earth
In 1854 the quickest way around the globe was a steamer berth and a reliable tide table. Stanford’s 1854 Route Map of the Earth was drawn in London for exactly that world: fifteen years before the Suez Canal opened, before the first transcontinental railroad crossed Promontory Summit, when passage to India still meant rounding the Cape or breaking the journey overland at Egypt. The colour edition carries the warm tinting and engraved lettering of mid-Victorian British cartography.
