Stanford’s Route Map of the Earth
In 1853 the fastest way around the globe was a ship’s wake. This map, printed in black and white, holds that moment still: sixteen years before the Suez Canal opened, decades before flight collapsed the distance between London and Sydney. The line work does the talking here. No color washes, no shaded relief, just the continents and the world’s travel routes rendered in fine engraved detail.
Map Shop produces this piece as a reproduction from the Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive, the same London house that has published maps since 1853.
- Reproduction, not an original: the archive sheet is scanned at high resolution and printed fresh for each order
- Published by Stanfords in 1853, monochrome throughout
- Paper finish uses premium 36lb stock; laminated finishes apply 1.7mil satin-gloss film front and back
- Mounted option bonds the map to 1/4 inch foam core, with black or walnut rails and framing available
A natural fit for maritime history collectors, a study wall, or a library reading room.
