Stanford’s Map of the British Metropolis, 1877
London in 1877 was the largest city on earth, still run by the Metropolitan Board of Works a dozen years before the London County Council existed. Stanford’s Map of the British Metropolis records the capital at that moment, published by Edward Stanford, the firm that had made itself the standard name in British commercial cartography.
As an 1877 map of London, it reads as both a document and a wall piece: dense Victorian street fabric surrounded by the suburbs the railways were pulling into the city.
