Raynal and Bonne 1780 British Isles Map
French cartographers drew Britain with a rival’s eye, and it shows. This 1780 engraving came from the workshop of Rigobert Bonne (1727 to 1794), Royal Cartographer to France and one of the most respected map engravers of the late eighteenth century, whose plates illustrated the atlases published alongside the writings of Guillaume-Thomas Raynal.
This map presents the three kingdoms as a single sheet of French copperplate engraving, with place names, coastal detail, and regional divisions labeled in eighteenth-century French.
