Earth’s Spiral Home – Milky Way Galaxy Map
This National Geographic map answers a question most star charts dodge: what does our galaxy look like from outside it? Earth’s Spiral Home renders the whole spiral in a single computer-generated view, built from a 3D model that places hundreds of thousands of stars and nebulae in position.
Earth sits near the Orion Arm, marked and labeled. Bright knots of recently formed stars trace the arms. A dense swarm of orange and red stars marks the galactic bulge around the star-packed core, where a black hole may lie. Star clusters, interstellar gas and dust, molecular clouds, young stars, and galactic bursts glow against deep space, with inset photographs and short descriptions of standout phenomena, including the eerie “ghosts of a star” visible from Earth with binoculars.
Originally published in National Geographic’s 11th Edition Atlas of the World, now sold on its own through Map Shop. It pairs naturally with Solar System: The Sun’s Neighborhood on a gallery wall, and works in classrooms, science departments, and home offices.
