National Geographic Universe: Vast and Expanding
No ordinary wall map faces the challenge this one does: how do you draw something 45 billion light-years across? The answer is a series of graphic leaps in scale, each panel stepping back from the last until the observable universe fits on a single sheet.
It starts close to home with the sun and its eight planets, then widens to our stellar neighborhood out to 20 light-years, then the galactic realm, the Local Group, and finally the known universe itself. Matter almost certainly exists beyond that edge, but the speed of light keeps it out of reach, and the map says so plainly.
Originally published in the Atlas of the World, 11th Edition by National Geographic, it is now sold on its own and pairs naturally with Milky Way: Earth’s Galactic Home.
Map Shop finishes it in the following formats:
- Paper
- Laminated
- Mounted to foam core
- Railed in black or walnut molding
