A Map Shop Travel Guide
NEW ZEALAND

There are some locales that nearly everyone considers the quintessential travel stops for any seasoned wanderlust sufferer. The UK, France, Italy – those all certainly make the list. Meanwhile, somewhere like New Zealand doesn’t get brought up nearly as often, but it should. Whether you’re a backpacking pro or someone just looking to see the sights, New Zealand has something to offer you.

The home of fantastic surf, killer treks, gorgeous rolling hills, busy metro areas, and some of the best national parks around, this South Pacific island county is a must-see for anyone itching for their next grand adventure. There should certainly be a little planning first, though, and we’re here to assist with just that. Keep reading along for a brief guide to the country and what you should expect before your plane touches down.

The Best Time To Travel

New Zealand is a special place for many reasons, although one of them is that there truly is no “bad” time to visit. The country is so diverse, beautiful, and packed full of fun opportunities that you can always have a fantastic time regardless of the season or temperature. However, there are certainly some times of the year that are more appropriate for certain activities and sightseeing.

For example, any lovers of snowy photography and cold-weather sports are probably best off altogether avoiding the tourist rush that often accompanies summer. Instead, June to September will be the ideal time to visit for these wintery fans, particularly for those who have trips to South Island plastered all over the itinerary as that’s when the area’s at its chilliest, most snow-covered.

But what about the average traveler who wants a more temperate, relaxed visit? March to May is likely to be a real hit. Temperatures are cooler since it’s the country’s fall months, there’s still plenty to see and do, and – bonus – flight prices start dipping now that the high season has passed.

What to Expect

Relying on the internet might not be the smartest move. Over the years, internet access and speeds have seen a massive uptick worldwide. Although, it seems like New Zealand might not have gotten the memo like everyone else. The country is infamous for its sluggish speeds and spotty connection, which largely holds true regardless of where you are. Big metros are nearly as bad as more rural, out-of-the-way areas, so don’t go into your New Zealand adventure thinking you can rely on your phone. Always carry a couple of maps, have your itinerary downloaded or in print, and pre-book things whenever possible.

Prices are definitely expensive here – really expensive. People love to complain about prices everywhere. Yet, those who grieve for their wallet in New Zealand aren’t overreacting by any means. The country truly is shockingly expensive, particularly for folks from the US, UK, or Germany. Just a bottle of Corona at the local bar will easily set you back $10 USD, while gas can often be found at $6 USD or higher. As we said, it’s pretty pricey – something you should thoroughly plan for if you have a set travel budget.

The people of New Zealand are extremely friendly. In the US, we love to constantly bring up how nice our northern neighbors are up in Canada, and their good reputation is well-earned. Although, the good Canadians still have nothing on New Zealand’s locals. The kiwis are incredibly helpful and friendly to a fault, obviously influenced by the old Māori saying that translates to something like “Goodwill towards others is a precious treasure.” If you need something, all you have to do is ask. Someone around you will have your back, making New Zealand visits far less intimidating for traveling newbies and veterans alike.

A good SPF is a non-negotiable. New Zealand is naturally a location that asks you to spend a significant amount of time outside. It’s part of the culture, and some, if not most, of the country’s most extraordinary adventures all happen in the great outdoors. You should, of course, make sure to wear sunscreen anytime you’re out and about like that, but visits to New Zealand call for this more than nearly anywhere else. Why? There’s literally a hole in the ozone above this island destination, making sun exposure even harsher. Thus, be sure to protect yourself. Get a high SPF sunscreen and make sure you actually use it.

Activities Not To Miss

The scenery is beyond gorgeous. New Zealand is a fun place. It’s commonly regarded as the home of extreme sports and is rife with excellent shopping, delicious food, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, but it’s also just drop-dead gorgeous. With vivid green forests, clear glacial waters, clean sandy beaches, and panoramic mountain peaks, the country easily has some of the best, most diverse scenery you’ll ever get a chance to witness. Seriously, don’t sleep on a relaxed tour or mild hike because you really need to take in all the sights.
